Overview
I will be running one-to-one music lessons for children between the ages of 6 and 14 on Saturdays, which will provide a broad introduction to the world of music in an interactive and fun way.
Goals
The primary goals are to help your child to develop an early interest in music and to provide an opportunity to learn about and appreciate music in a different way.
This will be achieved by looking at different instruments and by listening to different types of music. Your child will also get to play with a variety of instruments. I will primarily be teaching with the aid of guitars and keyboard.
I also offer practical experience of using music technology. This is an excellent way to learn and develop computer skills in a creative and fun way.
Lesson Plan
I offer 40 minute sessions with a basic lesson plan that includes:
- Leaning About Different Instruments - 5 min
- Music Technology - 15 min
- Introduction to Music Theory & Ear Training Exercises - 5 min
- Musical Performance - 15 min
Although the lesson plan is structured, it is also flexible to cater to the needs of the student.
Musical Performance
Each week I will spend 15 min teaching your child the basics for a number of instruments:
Guitar
Learn how to tune a guitar
Learn to play single notes and chords
Play a scale over multiple strings
Learn how to use a plectrum to strum
Learn how to finger pick
Lean how to read tablature notation
Keyboard
Learn the notes of the keyboard
Learn how to play scales and arpeggios
Learn basic chords and how to play a melody at the same time.
Ukulele
Chords and chord shapes
Strumming patterns
Bass Guitar
The role of the bass guitar
Learn about root notes, walking bass lines and blues progressions
Drums
Learn the different parts of a drum kit
Basic drum rhythms
Learning About Different Instruments
Each week we will look at a different musical instrument. This will involve learning about the different parts of the instrument, the materials used and in what forms of music the instrument is usually played.
We will also take a look at famous performers and composers for each of the instruments. This will range from Aaron Copland to ZZ Top and a whole lot in between.
Listening to Music
Some weeks we will listen to a specific style of music and work out what instruments are used and what makes the genre of music distinctive. This will involve Disney music, movie soundtracks, classical, jazz and rock.
We will also listen to your child's favorite band or song and see if we can develop a better understanding of the music they like by listening to the instruments used, the production, the tempo etc.
Introduction to Music Theory & Reading Music
Each week I will spend time introducing your child to music theory and reading music. This will be a useful basis for any musical endeavors your child may take up in the future.
Ear Training Exercises
Using the guitar and keyboard I will play games and complete exercises that will help to develop your childŐs musical ear. Over a number of weeks I would expect to see this develop fairly quickly.
Music Technology
The worlds of music and technology have come together. Your child will have access to a high quality iMac computer with expensive audio software to allow them to develop computer skills in a creative and fun way.
The two main software applications that I will be introducing are Reason and Audacity.
Reason
Reason is a music software program that emulates a rack of hardware synthesizers, samplers, signal processors, sequencers, and mixers. Reason can be used as a complete virtual music studio.
- Compose, edit and produce music using a MIDI keyboard and the software sequencer along with the Reason synth and sampling modules to record and produce new musical ideas
- Navigate the interface using the different views
- Load preset settings
- Build a track with drums, bass, chords and melodies
- Edit notes using graphic tools
- Show how effects devices can be connected to the mixer and to instruments
- Import sampled sounds into a selection of devices
- Construct a clear and effective 'mix' of the composition and export it to mp3 file or CD
- With parental permission, we will upload the finished tracks to soundcloud.com
Audacity
Audacity is a Digital Audio Editor that can be used to record and modify sounds and music digitally.
- Record from microphone
- Dub over existing tracks to create multi-track recordings
- Import and export audio files
- Create files suitable for burning to CD
- Easy edits with Cut, Copy, Paste, and Delete
- Fade the volume up or down smoothly
- Change the pitch without altering the tempo, or vice-versa
- Remove static, hiss, hum, or other constant background noises
- Alter frequencies with Equalization and Bass Boost effects
- Adjust volumes with Compressor, Amplify, and Normalize effects
- Use effects: Echo, Phaser, Wah-wah & Reverse
